As a parent of an aspiring young dancer helping them navigate a career path can be daunting. Are they getting the training they need? Is it time for them to leave home for a professional school? Is this the right path for them to go down? At VVBS we don’t just offer personalized virtual Ballet training but we also nourish our student’s growth along their career path you sit down with parents and students to answer your questions and help you choose the right path for you and your family.
Often when a student is wondering about their future in which direction to take, they are looking to have someone with experience guide them and help with decisions. What summer program should I attend? How do I keep my confidence up? Do I need to attend a year-round program to have a chance at a particular company? How do I handle a teacher that doesn’t seem to like me? Just as often, we find behind every student with one question, there is a parent with 20 more.
When Miss Lauren was a student, she came home from dance one day to find her dad reading a book about Ballet. “What are you doing,” Miss Lauren asked. “Trying to make sense of all this,” said her dad. We have found that a lot of dance parents feel that way. It is a world they don’t understand. They feel unsure of how to help their child navigate it and avoid the pitfalls unique to ballet. Their children are using terms they don’t understand to describe situations they’ve never been in. We find that our mentoring sessions are extremely valuable for our students, but priceless for parents.
Just recently we sat down with one of our students here at VVBS for a mentoring session. His mother joined us and they both found this time to be incredibly helpful. Here is what she had to say after our meeting. “Our son has aspirations to dance professionally but we are not a ‘dance family’. We recently spent an hour with Fran and Lauren asking a variety of questions about pursuing a career in dance. They were so helpful and I wish we had ten hours to get through all of the questions we had! In addition to answering all of my son's questions, they also pointed out other things he should be considering as he moves through this process. Despite my son having teachers during the year who have had professional careers, the opportunity rarely arises for him to be able to have in-depth conversations about the profession. And, since we don't know much about the dance world, having the opportunity to ask Fran and Lauren questions that they can answer based on real-world experience was so valuable!”
If you, as a student, or you, as a parent, feel that you could use a personalized chat about the world of professional ballet, we are here for you. At VVBS we believe in nourishing each dancer as a whole and mentorship sessions are a big part of our mission.
